If you opened any form of social media or news platform on October 8th, you likely read “Google Plus shuts down” everywhere. Google ousted consumer access to the Google Plus platform and here’s what we uncovered. A bug in the API for Google+ had been allowing third-party app developers to access the data to all Google Plus members who granted permission, and even their friends who did not. This may sound oddly familiar because it’s almost the same set of circumstances that had Mark Zuckerberg in the US Congress hot seat a few months back. According to The Wall Street Journal, Google realized the similarities and decided not to disclose the breach in fear of damaging their reputation, and by now we’re sure they’re wishing they followed in Taylor Swift’s footsteps taking their BIG reputation in stride. Shortly after the article was published, Google announced in a blog post the four main findings they uncovered during their internal API review, which they referred to as Project Strobe. The first finding leading to a company-wide decision to close the consumer access door to Google Plus for good, the other three enhancing what’s left of the Google suite as a whole.

The first question is – what is a Hangout On Air? In short, an HOA is how you broadcast your voice to the world. Sound intimidating? We say, pssshhh. An HOA is a conversation you have with up to 9 other people as it streams live over YouTube. You can also just host a conversation between others without broadcasting over YouTube, and that is simply called a hangout. The difference? HOAs potentially connect you with an unlimited amount of viewers as well provide a recording of what you did. You can also change the video settings after it processes to private or unlisted access. By changing the settings, you can control who gets to see the HOA after it’s over. Make sure you don’t delete it, otherwise, you lose the view count. When Google+ announced it would launch Communities a few days ago, loyal users didn’t dare take their eyes off their computer screens. In fact, as many anxiously waited for their invitations, they were also posting jokes about continuously stroking the F5 key for a refresh. And, for the techies on Google+, that was hilarious. Many others likely know little about this new Communities feature. Heck, they may not even be active on Google+ at this point. Despite hundreds of millions of people on the service, chances are they know only a fraction of their Facebook friends who are actually engaged on Google+. Google+ brand pages are slowly making a splash with big brands adoption. Obviously Google+ does not have the tools & applications it’s competitor Facebook has, but does have a cool feature to catch the eye of the visitor, animated scrapbook photos in the header. Until developers are allowed full access to Google+ API, one can only get creative not only with page content, but with animation.
